RE at Hardwicke

Intent

At Hardwicke School, our intent in Religious Education (RE) is to provide a rich and inclusive curriculum that enables pupils to explore a range of religious and non-religious worldviews. Rooted in our Christian ethos and guided by our vision of “Doing Everything in Love” and our six core values - friendship, forgiveness, courage, perseverance, respect, and service - we aim to nurture respect, curiosity, and understanding. Through RE, we want pupils to develop the ability to think deeply, engage in meaningful discussions, and appreciate diversity, preparing them to live well together in a multi-faith and multicultural world.

ImplementationWe follow the Agreed Syllabus for Gloucestershire, however a revised version is currently being implemented across year groups and we will fully adopt the revised syllabus from September 2026. RE is taught weekly across all year groups, ensuring continuity and progression. Lessons are designed to be interactive and discussion-based, encouraging pupils to ask questions, share ideas, and reflect on their own beliefs and values. We challenge children to think deeply and ask meaningful questions, while supporting them to explain why people hold different beliefs and values. We explore Christianity alongside a range of other major world religions and worldviews, fostering respect and empathy. Our curriculum integrates our school vision and values into every lesson, promoting an environment where pupils learn about others and practice living out love and respect in daily life.

Impact

Through our Religious Education curriculum, pupils at Hardwicke School develop a secure and developing understanding of Christianity, other major world religions, and non-religious worldviews, in line with the Gloucestershire Agreed Syllabus. Pupils are able to think critically, ask thoughtful questions, and engage respectfully in discussion about beliefs, values, and ways of life.

RE supports pupils to articulate their own views with confidence and sensitivity, while showing respect and empathy towards others. They demonstrate an understanding of diversity and are prepared to live well together in a multi-faith and multicultural society. Through reflection and discussion, pupils are supported to make connections between beliefs and actions, applying our school vision of “Doing Everything in Love” and our core values in their relationships and daily life.

By the end of their time at Hardwicke School, pupils leave with the knowledge, skills, and attitudes needed to engage thoughtfully with religion and belief, and to contribute positively to their communities, reflecting the expectations of both SIAMS and the Gloucestershire Agreed Syllabus.
